The high-tech industry’s biggest problem is not blowing its own trumpet writes Anthony Doesburg
If other parts of the New Zealand economy are afflicted by self-doubt, the technology sector has no such hang-ups.
Insiders will tell you the ICT industry alone contributed nearly $20 billion to the economy in 2008. And that at $4.9 billion, the top 100 technology companies’ export sales were last year second only to dairy’s. About 40,000 people work in the New Zealand ICT sector and more than a quarter of venture capital and seed funding invested in the country goes to ICT companies.
MediaWorks encompasses the TV channels TV3 and FOUR, plus over 30 radio stations, with a total staff level of approximately 1,400. Recently they implemented Greentree in the TV businesses as part of the CBA Upgrade Plan. The first stage of the project included the core financial modules, plus integrated Fixed Assets and Alerts & Approvals. So far, it has been hugely successful, coming in on time and under budget! Alerts and Approvals are currently being used to control new customer creation and monitor changes to various master file records.
Sensible companies implement ERP systems when they understand the return on investement the system will provide their business. The improvements in QlikView 11 are based on core ideas to help people make decisions. As an example, let’s take this story;
A Regional Sales Manager wants to identify areas where he can improve sales. He produces reports to see figures, and finds sales down in one area and so he organises to visit the Sales rep. He finds out that a lot of his product information is out of date, so he puts in place a regular training program and follow-up process. There are 3 inputs that would affect that sales result; the people, the environment and the data.
