Finding your way with Microsoft's ERP offering

When it comes to what's on offer from Microsoft in terms of ERP solutions, it can be confusing. But it doesn't need to be.

Microsoft recently announced it had recorded $US 38 billion in revenue for its commercial cloud business, putting it well ahead of competitors Google, Salesfroce.com and even Amazon Web Services. One element of this success has been its cloud ERP offerings under the Dynamics 365 banner.

For New Zealand companies looking for ERP, Microsoft is a valid option, but it working out what of their many solutions is the best fit can be a challenge. The Dynamics ERP portfolio includes a seemingly endless variety of products (AX, SL, F&O, 365 Business Central and so on), customisations, deployment models, and pricing schemas. Each one appears to offer some degree of end-to-end functionality. Purchasing an ERP is difficult enough on its own, given the complexity of the software.

As a result, most business owners considering investing in an ERP, or upgrading an existing Microsoft solution, have many questions. Is it still a Microsoft product? Will Microsoft support it in the future? Is it still the right solution for my business, and if not, what is?

One of the positives about Microsoft ERPs is that they've built a lot of continuity into them. So although there's confusion about what's on offer, what's supported and what's best for a business, you can be sure they'll all feature:

  • Multiple deployment options, such as a private cloud server, Azure or on-premise.
  • Custom pricing that's based on features, users, deployment and support.
  • Compatibility with Office 365, meaning a business can seamlessly manage documents, spreadsheets, presentations, email, and instant messaging.
  • Implementation by an approved partner. You can't just buy an ERP off the shelf and install it; the implementation is carried out by experienced consultants. That's where we come in.
