We have exciting news with Larry Stenberg, our Chief Operating Officer, being selected to represent New Zealand in the Masters Hockey World Cup. This will take place over two weeks in June in Rotterdam.
The Masters World Cup is being held simultaneously and in conjunction with the regular Men’s and Women’s World Cups, just down the road in The Hague. Both the Men’s and Women’s Black Sticks have qualified so New Zealand will be well represented and supported throughout.
Being his first time representing New Zealand Larry said “it’s a life-long dream come true and is extra special for being a World Cup and in Holland”. This is because Larry’s father is Dutch and he still has many relatives in Holland, who he regularly keeps in touch with. The last two years at night school learning the language should certainly be put to good use!
Larry has been playing hockey for 36 years now, many of those in both winter and summer. Since becoming eligible to play Masters (at age 40) he has played in all eight National (i.e., inter-provincial) Tournaments and secured two National titles and two Runners-up medals with Auckland.
And in a final twist, he has been planning a trip to the Netherlands with his family for a number of years and, not long after booking and paying for it, discovered – as Murphy’s Law would have it – that he is now scheduled to fly out for that holiday just three weeks after returning from the tournament!
